Background

One of the 12 commitments of IMPALA’s EDI Charter is to carry out regular surveys to measure diversity across the European independent music sector, with results published anonymously and in aggregated form.

The surveys help IMPALA better understand the situation in different European countries, track progress over time and identify where further support and resources may be needed.

Second diversity sector survey

IMPALA launched its second EDI sector survey on 30 April 2026, as part of the new EDI toolkit.

The survey takes around 5 minutes to complete. All responses are treated confidentially, and results will be published anonymously and in aggregated form.

Members can complete the survey directly or through the EDI self-assessment tool, which is also part of the Toolkit. The self-assessment offers an additional benefit, allowing companies and associations to review their own EDI practices and receive personalised results and recommendations.

There is no need to complete both: responses submitted through the self-assessment also contribute to the sector survey.

All IMPALA members are invited to participate by 1 December 2026. The results will feed into IMPALA’s second sector survey report, expected in spring 2027.

First diversity sector survey 

In May 2021, during European Diversity Month, IMPALA launched the first Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) survey for the European independent music sector. IMPALA designed the survey to map best practices, local developments and projects regarding diversity and inclusion, and to start building a basic picture of the sector’s diversity and key issues faced.
